Electric, Water and Sewer

The City of Salem owns and operates its electric distribution system and water/sewer system. The city does not generate electricity, but contracts with Show-Me Power Corp for base and peak load power.

The city has five deep wells for water supply. Other than chlorine injection, there is no treatment of the water. The water in Salem is tested in accordance with the Clean Drinking Water Act.

Turning On New Residential Customers

You will need to come to our office at 400 N Iron St, in the City Administration Building to start new utility services. Questions may be directed to a Utility Service Representative at (573) 729-4117.

Customers should contact us at least ONE day in advance of needing the utilities connected.
Deposits and the service fee should be paid at the time of requesting the service.

Sanitation services area mandatory for city residents having electrical services.
(Note: 6 bags or 4-30 gallon trash can limit)
Sanitation services are billed for the current month and are not based on service dates.
The City of Salem does all the billing and collection of residential sanitation fees for Waste Corporation.

Tree Limbs and Yard Waste

Curbside service is available for residential customers on the first and third Mondays of each month, if waste is placed in biodegradable bags and tree limbs are cut into approximately three-foot lengths and stacked in bundles.

Sanitation

Commercial customers should contact Waste Corporation of America (WCA) for arrangements for Sanitation services 1-800-359-7929. Rates and billing for commercial waste is managed directly by Waste Corporation of America.

Residential and Commercial Accounts

Transfering from One Account to Another

  • Customers should contact us at least ONE day in advance of needing the utilities transferred.
  • The deposits paid on the old account will be transferred over to the new account.

Disconnecting Accounts

  • Contact a Utility Service Representative at our office at 400 N Iron St to sign a work order.
  • Customers will need to supply a forwarding address.
  • Customers should contact us at least ONE day in advance of needing the utilities transferred.
  • Deposits will be applied to the final bill. Any amount left over will be sent to the customer.

Automatic Bill Payment

An easier way to pay your utility bill.
With our free Automatic Bill Payment service, you can have your City of Salem utility bill paid automatically from any participating Bank, Savings and Loan, or Credit Union account.

With Automatic Bill Payment, you still keep control of your utility payments. You will continue to receive a monthly utility statement. Automatic withdrawals are made on the ninth of each month and credit card dates can be chosen with the help of the utility department personnel. Payments will be deducted from your account. There is plenty of time to review the statement and call the Utility Office representative if you have any questions. If there is a billing error, it will be handled in the normal way, with a credit adjustment on your next bill.

How to apply: Contact the City of Salem utility Department at 400 N Iron St, Salem, Mo 65560 to set up auto pay with an automatic withdrawal or with a debit or credit card.

You may call the Police Department in an emergency (waterline break, etc) 573-729-4242. Service fees will apply.

Contact the Utility Department in the City Administration Building at 573-729-4117. If the water bill is significantly higher than the average, the customer service representative will send a check for leak to the Water Department. If there is a question about electric usage, the meter can be reread.

No reminders are mailed. On the 28th of each month, delinquent accounts are turned off.

Yes, a 10% penalty is applied to all bills (electric, water and sewer) if not paid in 20 days.

How many days do I have to pay my utility bill?2017-08-10T09:32:31+00:00

Your utility bill is due 20 days from the billing date. You receive a 1 % discount on your electric portion of your bill if it is paid in 10 days. If your bill is not paid within the 10-day grace period, you will not receive the discount. Utilities bills must be paid by the 27th of each month.

No, these require one day’s notice. If you contact our office on Friday, the utilities will not be disconnected until the following Monday.

No. We no longer do any new service connections after hours or on weekends.
